Our History
From atomic energy roots to a thriving community hub, discover the story of The Daten.
The Birth of the "DATEN"
It all began after the war, when the Ministry of Supply formed its Division of Atomic Energy (DATEN) at Risley. Families were moved into temporary accommodation in Culcheth, and with few local facilities, the "Atomics"-as they were known locally-formed their own Sports & Social Club in 1947.
"The name 'DATEN' represents the Division of Atomic Energy."
A Naval Connection
In 1956, the club acquired part of the disused naval camp, **HMS Ariel West**. Our present Main Hall was originally a naval gymnasium used for social functions and dances. We still honor this connection today through the Ariel Lounge and the HMS Ariel Coat of Arms.
On July 3rd, 1958, the club officially opened at our current site, inviting local residents to join alongside the UKAEA staff.
A Club Owned by its Members
A major milestone was reached on May 29th, 1998, when the members purchased the site and buildings outright for £203,000, thanks to support from the National Lottery and the Sports Council. For the first time, The Daten became a completely independent, self-financing body.
Today
Following extensive recent renovations, The Daten has been restored to its former glory. We remain an independent venue dedicated to high-quality sport and leisure for the whole community.
