Club Newsletter Jan 23rd

Dear Club Member

Brace yourselves for a meaty newsletter and a red weather alert!

Tennis News

Winter League

Winter League Phase Two Mixed Doubles got underway last weekend.  LLTC has six teams competing in this event: Grade 1, Grade 2 and two teams each of Grades 5 and 6.

Both Grade 5 teams were in action last weekend at home with varied results:

Grade 5 XD Blue drew 2-2 with Causeway White.

Grade 5 XD Green lost 4-0 to St. Michaels, although some of the matches were very competitive and close.

This is just the start of the round robin stage so there is still plenty of time to qualify.

Best of luck to the Grade 2 and Grade 6 Blue teams who are travelling to away matches this weekend:

Grade 2 play Tramore, and Grade 6 Blue play Lakewood in Cork.

Junior South Of Ireland

We have had a HUGE entry for the junior south this year with almost 350 children entered in the competition that takes place over 3-4 days. We have received excellent feedback from Tennis Ireland on how we have run the tournament over the past couple of years but we need some volunteers to help us to keep the standard of the tournament up. Please let Sinead Dunne know if you are available the February bank holiday weekend to help out by emailing  coaching@lltc.ie

Clay Court Usage

The Management Committee would like to continue to encourage our members to increase their usage of our clay courts. The clay courts were installed last year but bookings on the system suggest that they are not being utilised as much as our artificial grass surfaces.

As a reminder to all members, the artificial clay courts were installed to improve player development at all levels.

Why play on clay vs grass?

- Clay slows down the ball so rallies are longer and point quality is better therefore more enjoyable at all levels.

  • Promotes core footwork and balance skills
  • Teaches players to succeed on any surface
  • 8 out of 10 of today’s top ranked players grew up playing on clay
  • Develops strength, fitness, and endurance
  • Soft, sliding clay reduces common tennis injuries as clay is easier on the joints reducing the risk of injury.
  • The clay courts dry off quicker than our grass courts resulting in a higher availability all year round.

Practicing on clay courts is better for the development of players. Training on clay teaches shot tolerance and patience. Instead of trying to put every ball away with that huge forehand, those who train on clay (especially juniors) learn to build points to get a shorter ball to put away. It also improves footwork, endurance and mental toughness.

While we do recognise that brushing the courts afterwards takes a few more minutes, it’s also a great way to cool down and teaches us all to care for our courts.

General Housekeeping

SAFETY:

Please note for the safety of all Member’s and their property, to be vigilant at the Club as there are some young lads that are going around and causing some hassle. If you have a bike, car or any mode of transport left outside, to please make sure it is locked and secure. If you see anyone up to no good, please confront them if you feel comfortable about that and report any issues to someone on duty at the club.

WATER BOTTLES:

There are a million and one water bottles floating around the courts and club. If you have left any behind, please come and collect them in the foyer, as we will need to remove them soon.

Energy Awareness

Our energy bills were €43k last year.  In light of this I would appeal to members to be energy conscious.  The floodlights on the tennis courts are run manually, so it is every members responsibility to turn them off after use.  Don’t assume the court is booked after you, just turn them off.  Also the gym, turn off the lights when you are leaving.

Squash

Sunday Social Squash

Sunday Social Squash continues this Sunday from 3:30pm, please drop over to meet other club members and enjoy some squash.

Poll will go up on WhatsApp on Friday to see who is attending.

Squash 57 Introduction for Men

Notes from the coach

Introduction for men to SQ57 from 19:30  to 19:30 on Wed, 29th of January.

Limited to 8 participants on the night but if full, please add yourself to the waiting list and another session will be run soon after. Restricted to members only.

Suitable for every ages and ability.

Squash 57 is a fantastic, easy, fun sport to play and offers a more relaxed but still very competitive alternative to regular squash. It’s a great 2nd game to have available for either tennis or regular squash and is a hybrid of racket ball but played on a squash court.

There will be a short introduction to the rules, then away you go. Squash players will be on hand to guide gameplay if needed but the game is simple, just whack the ball and have fun !
