NEWSLETTER - SPRING 2026

Hi all,

Another year and firstly, may I welcome the new members we have joining and our existing members to the club. It is great to see both familiar and new faces. It feels like another great start to the year, with lots going on. As I write this, we are at the start of our Spring Championships, our juniors are smashing it in Leinster leagues and there is building excitement for our first ever Open, with the very kind sponsorship of Westgrove Hotel.

Outside of tennis, the clubhouse and courts are looking fantastic and will no doubt, do us proud for the Open. The development sub-committee are putting together plans for a refurb of the changing and shower areas, as part of a submission for grant funding. We will keep everyone posted on progress.

Liam Burke meeting with the Minister of Sport, Charlie McGonigle and Minister James Lawless.

On the social front, we have had some great nights already and now that the weather is finally beginning to dry off… we are looking forward to having a number of social events over the coming months.

I am so thankful to the new committee and sub-committees and volunteers for all their support and work to date. There are lots of exciting developments going on and without your support this work wouldn’t be possible.

If you have any questions or ideas you’d like to put forward or indeed things you are not happy about, please do get in touch with me. My number is 087 4198585.

In January, we introduced doubles coaching, Kieran Lardner as coach, in which we had 4 group sessions every Thursday for 7 weeks, a total of 32 players taking part each evening. The real aim of this was of course doubles training and tactics, but
with an eye on Winter League for when the results would show.

On the topic of Winter League, on the men's side we had 3 teams take part, some groups containing very strong opposition, but a strong showing and commitment across the 5 game weeks.

We are currently into the latter stages of our Leinster Regional Spring League, with both a ladies and men's team entered. Each team has 1 final game to go, our ladies playing away to Prosperous on April 19th, with our men travelling to Mullingar on the
same day, with a qualification spot in their sights!

Our Spring Championships are officially underway! We had a full house both on and of the court for our opening set of matches on April 13th, and will continue to do so over the next two weeks, with finals day taking place on Saturday, April 25th. Our finals this year will start from 4:30 pm, so it'll be an enjoyable evening of tennis and fun.

In the Men's Doubles Box League, we had 20 pairs enter, across 4 boxes.

Box 4:

Following our Spring Championships, all talk will be about our upcoming Clane Tennis Club Open!! This event will be open to members and non-members, so keep an eye out for entry being open to confirm your spot in an event. Event will take place from May 29 th  - June 1st.

None of the above takes place without having the players enter, but also without the work of the committee and sub committees behind the scenes giving up their free time to arrange the many different events, so a special thank you to all.

What a great start for our junior boys and girls to 2026 who participated in challenge matches in January to compete for three of our Leinster League teams. Although, teams of 4 were selected everyone else involved were placed on a sub panel and have participated in weekly team practice since the beginning of February in preparation for the Junior Regional Leinster League which started on the 7 th March and is now in full swing.

Our Under 18’s team managed by Orlaith Edwards (Anna Grainger, Dara Poole, Jamie Greene and Finn McCormack with super subs Katie Wolfe, Eve Fahy and Jason and Andrew McCormack) are leading their section of the competition sofar.
Our Under 15’s Team managed by Lorraine Power, Peta McCormack, Ava Kilbride, Cian d’Rosario and Cian Doolan with super sub panel, Sean Garry, Ojal Singh Samantaray, Thomas Cunningham, Tom Mullholland, Isabella Brogan Shannon O’Rourke, Clara Keating and Chloe Cafferty have shown huge enthusiasm in playing and practicing as well as supporting their teammates.

Our Under 12’s Team managed by Aish McCormack (Maria McCormack, Millie Salvetti, Eoin d’Rosario and Jiresh Singh Samantary and super sub panel, Liam Whelan, Max Salvetti, Ella and Grace Berkery, Ella Finnerty, OJane Bangura and Nora Cafferty have all shown incredible resilience on court in their matches to date and it was so wonderful to see the clubhouse heaving with support from families and friends watching their very first match in Clane against a strong Naas team. What a fantastic fun and friendly but competitive experience its been for all involved!

Our junior coaching 11 week program is up and running with 160 children registered under the care of our experienced tennis coaches. The program started on the 4 th March and will run through to the beginning of June. Sincere thanks to all our coaches who continue to do great work. A big shout out to all our dedicated court assistants, Laura Edwards, Eve Fahy, Anna Grainger, Dara Poole, Martyna Araszkiewica, Fionn Murray and Jason McCormack who are crucial to the success of the junior programme.

Many of our older juniors Eve Fadden, Anna Grainger, Dara Poole, Katie Wolfe & Annabelle Fadden have been knocking it out of the park competing in our Ladies Doubles Box League. Congratulations to Annabelle and Katie on winning their box and to Bebhinn Doyle and Eve Fahy who finished runners-up in theirs. Great to see you all enjoying your tennis so much and progressing to compete with the seniors! St. Patricks Day saw a fantastic turnout of 35 of our younger juniors who dressed up in “Fifty Shades of Green” style to proudly represent our club by marching in the parade. We were once again delighted to welcome parents, children and members back to the clubhouse for refreshments and special St. Patricks Day goodie bags.

We cannot forget to mention our wonderful groundsman and caretaker Tommy McAndrew who with the help of Mick Hennessy and Suzanne Banim did an outstanding job decorating the clubhouse so festively. It goes without saying that the balloon display was an absolute work of art!!

Thanks to Dee Cassidy and Leo Gordon of Prosperous Tennis Club for welcoming many of our juniors for a friendly Friday evening tournament in February. It was brilliant to see everyone having fun and playing such competitive tennis and the fact that it wasn’t raining was a real bonus!

What a fantastic turnout from so many who participated in our Valentines Social on the 14 th February and our recent Easter “IT’S A KNOCKOUT” event which was all about TEAM spirit and filled with lots of fun, laughter and abit of chaos thrown in for good measure! Sincere thanks to Paula Garey, Anne O’Shea, Catriona McAneney and Tommy McAndrew for making the event such a success!

We would also like to give a huge shout out to all the parents who volunteer their time to assist with clubhouse supervision. Junior coaching could not happen without your assistance as the club follows Tennis Ireland’s policy and guidelines to safeguard our juniors.

On the 6 th April we introduced a Junior Singles Box League for all juniors aged 11+ and got an incredible response. The matches are played using a FAST FOUR format as an introduction to understanding how sets and tie-breakers are played. Many of the participants are confident to play independently, however for our less experienced players we organised supervision to help facilitate the matches. The league will run until the end of May and there will be prizes for the winners and runners-up in each box of which there are 8. Based on the results our junior ladder will be updated and activated for challenges throughout the summer months.

Lastly. we would also like to take this opportunity to appeal for help. This does not have to mean joining the junior committee, however in order to give our juniors the socials, tournaments and competition they love and deserve, we need more help.
Getting involved can be incredibly rewarding so please if you’re interested please do let us know and get in touch.
LOTS to look forward to so KEEP UP THE PRACTICE EVERYONE!!

A big thank you to AYU Cosmetics for their generous support, which made it possible for the tennis club to run a 6-week ladies’ doubles tactics coaching programme throughout October and November 2025. Many members also took part in the popular TopSpin clinics held in January and April this year with coach Ciaran Redmond.

It was especially encouraging to see so many new players benefit from the Beginners coaching sessions led by Richie and Shaun Mahony. If you’d like to see more coaching programmes like these organised by the club, please get in touch with our captains, Wayne Quinn or Suzanne Banim.

As we head towards the longer evenings and hopefully some summer sun we have already completed our biggest project this year. We rejuvenated courts 1, 2 & 5 in March. This was a big undertaking with a company coming down from the north
bringing an industrial sweeper, tractor, dumper truck and conveyor belt system to suck up all the old sand and remove it from the courts.

Casey’s provided an industrial air Compressor, put new sand down and brushed the courts over the following two days. The 2 mini courts were brushed and cleaned for junior members. Other work included repairing some of the floor area in both the men’s and ladies dressing rooms, putting in a new shower in the ladies changing room.  We’ve installed traffic bollards to keep the main gates clear in case emergency access is needed.

Over the next month we will be getting the tennis club ready for our inaugural tennis open. Hedges will be trimmed, flowers planted and a general clear up of the grounds inside and outside the gates. Just a reminder to all members chewing gum is not permitted on any court as it is extremely hard to remove and please put all rubbish especially tennis ball tin lids in
the bins provided outside the courts.

As always, thank you to Tommy for keeping the clubhouse looking well every day.

Regards

Clane Tennis Club was delighted to host a Tennis Ireland Leinster Regional Day Cup on Saturday 28th February. The event took place on what turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day and was thoroughly enjoyed by the eight teams who travelled to
take part.

A special thank you goes to SuperValu Sallins for providing delicious catering on the day which was very much appreciated by players and supporters alike. Congratulations to Wicklow on winning the Cup. Well done also to the Clane team of Elaine Wallace, Sinead McFadden, Alan Mahoney and Ciaran Cullen who delivered a fantastic performance to finish as runners-up.

It was a wonderful day of tennis and great to see so many clubs represented.

What a great way to spend on a Monday morning – a competitive tennis match, a chat with friends and fab food! With a reliable core of four players, Fiona, Harriet, Juliette and Edie along with several subs Clane played really well.

The league was won by a very good Celbridge team and prizes were presented in Clane at the final event on the 23 rd of March. Thanks must go to the catering team who surpassed themselves – Harriet, Fiona, Edie, Juliette, Sheila and Sarah. Well done ladies!

Our Enjoy Tennis programme with Coach Enzo and the KARE residents resumed after Christmas. These sessions continue to bring fantastic energy and happiness, giving participants with disabilities the chance to stay active, develop their tennis skills and most importantly enjoy plenty of fun together on the court.

In November 2025 CLTC announced the news that we had been granted a licence to host our inaugural Senior Open Tournament for the June Bank Holiday weekend 2026 .. exciting times for our club. This event will welcome entries from players all across Ireland .. a fantastic opportunity to showcase our club, our facilities and our community. And since this date the CLANE OPEN Committee have been busy at work preparing. In February we were delighted to announce that the WESTGROVE HOTEL would proudly sponsor the event.

On the 20th April 2026 we launched the event at our clubhouse with much coverage across socials and print media included in the Leinster Leader and the Liffey Champion. CLTC members were invited to attend along with neighbouring clubs and local community groups too .. Clane Project Centre, Tidy Towns to name but a few. Joanne Deegan of the Westgrove Hotel, Minister James Lawless, Aidan Farrelly TD, Darko Palavra from Leinster Tennis all attended with plenty of coverage generated from the event which began the promotion wheel to the CLANE OPEN which really puts us on the map this June Bank Holiday weekend.

Online entries will be opening shortly so make sure to enter … lots of fun and good tennis to be enjoyed by player and spectator alike. And so the work continues in earnest behind the scenes to make this event a memorable one for all particpants.

For members who may have family and friends travelling to Clane for the weekend of the OPEN .. why not contact the team at the Westgrove Hotel and be sure to mention that you are taking part in the CLANE OPEN where they will be able to offer a range of options to sort your accommodation needs, particularly when its location is within walking distance of the club.  You can contact the team at the Westgrove Hotel on 045 989 9000.

Our annual Spring Championships took place over the past two weeks, and we were incredibly fortunate to enjoy fantastic weather throughout—sunny evenings that made for perfect playing conditions.

This year’s tournament featured 12 events in total, evenly split between singles and doubles, across A, B, and C grades. With 88 entries, the competition was strong across all levels. Matches were held each evening at 6:30pm and 8:00pm, with high-quality tennis on display from opening night on the 13th right through to finals day on Saturday the 25th.

Finals day drew a great crowd of members, whose support created a brilliant atmosphere and was rewarded with some excellent matches. It’s easy to see why the Spring Championships continues to grow in popularity each year—offering players of all standards the opportunity to compete, progress, and contend for a title.

The club organised food and refreshments for finals day, complemented by generous donations of sweet treats from members, which were very much appreciated. It was also particularly encouraging to see such strong participation from our junior members, many of whom showcased their talent by reaching finals across multiple events.
