What to Expect

The format is designed to encourage and assist members to play singles on a regular basis against players of a similar standard. We hope this will help all players at all standards to:

  • Have fun
  • Have scheduled matches against closely matched opponents
  • Expand your circle of hitting partners
  • Improve your tennis

General Rules

  • The box league is a singles league. Matches are best of 3 sets, with the third being a championship tie breaker ( first to 10 points).
  • Entrants are placed in a box of 4-6 players of similar standard.
  • During each stage (8 weeks), you play each other player in your box once.
  • At the end of each stage, players are promoted,  relegated or remain at the same level depending on their results. 2 players will be promted/relagated at the end of each stage.
  • The boxes are then re-drawn and a new stage begins. Over time, players will rise and fall depending on results and each stage should see different opponents and challenges. The results of the box league will serve as the foundation for our ladder rankings.
  • Players will organise their own matches which must be completed before the end of each stage.
  • The schedule will not be taxing. Each player should expect to play something like 4 games in 8 weeks.
  • This should leave enough space to schedule and play matches even around holidays etc.

Scoring Rules

  • Players will enter the results of their games on the Tennis Ireland site themselves. Instructions on how to do this are at the bottom of this page.
  • 3 points will be awarded for a victory, 1 point for a loss.
  • At the end of each stage, the top 2 of each group will be promoted and the bottom 2 will be regulated. There maybe occasions where more than 2 people will be promoted/regulated to ensure we have enough players in each of the boxes.
  • In the case where a game cannot be played, there are 3 outcomes that can be entered into the Tennis Ireland Box league system , Walkover , Not Played and Retired

Walkover

  • If a player has offered at least 2 dates to play, and the opponent has refused to play these dates, and has not offered any alternative dates.
  • If a player is more than 15 minutes late.
  • If a match has been firmly set up but is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice

Not Played

  • If 2 players could not play their game as they could not both agree to a date. In this case no points are awarded to either player.

Retired

  • If a player needs to leave the match before it is finished. The points will be awarded to the remaining player.
